Environnement et contexte de travail :

L'École des hautes études en sciences sociales (www.ehess.fr) est un établissement public à caractère scientifique, culturel et professionnel, « grand établissement » assurant une mission de recherche dans le domaine des sciences humaines et sociales et de formation à la recherche. L'établissement accueille 3 000 étudiants dans toutes les disciplines des sciences sociales, dont 1 500 doctorants (avec près de 250 thèses soutenues par an) et autant de masterants. L’EHESS accueille également 40 unités de recherche organisées autour d'un domaine, d'une approche ou, pour un tiers d'entre elles, d'une « aire culturelle ». En leur sein, plus de 500 enseignants et chercheurs développent les savoirs, forment et encadrent les étudiants de master et les doctorants.

L’École est membre fondateur de l’Établissement public Campus Condorcet, dont la mission est la coopération scientifique entre ses membres fondateurs, le soutien aux programmes de recherche de ces derniers, et la mise à disposition de conditions de travail à la hauteur des normes internationales aux personnels et étudiants. 

Le/la doctorant/e recruté/e sera intégré/e au Laboratoire d’Anthropologie Politique, un centre de production, expression, diffusion et articulation d’approches et lectures anthropologiques et critiques des sociétés contemporaines.

 

Présentation du projet :

AnceStra est un projet ERC-Consolidator, financé par la Commission européenne pour une durée de 5 ans, d’octobre 2025 à septembre 2030. Il explore, à travers une approche socio-anthropologique, les significations que des personnes concernées par des processus de restitutions de restes humains en contextes postcoloniaux attribuent aux restes ancestraux en question. Le projet part de demandes de restitution concernant une collection spécifique : les restes humains issus d’anciennes colonies allemandes en Afrique se trouvant aujourd’hui à l’Institut d'anatomie de l'Université de Strasbourg. Ces restes humains sont entrés dans la collection entre 1892 et 1911, durant l’annexion de l'Alsace-Lorraine par l'Allemagne, lorsque l'Université de Strasbourg était devenue allemande. Une enquête qualitative socio-anthropologique d’envergure Sud-Nord/Nord-Sud, Sud-Sud et Nord-Nord en France, en Namibie, en Tanzanie, et dans une moindre mesure en Allemagne, au Cameroun et au Togo sera réalisée par un réseau international et interdisciplinaire de chercheuses et de chercheurs.

 

Tâches collectives :

Le/la doctorant/e participera :

• Aux séminaires d’analyse mensuels du projet et à l’organisation de ces derniers (élaboration du programme et du compte rendu, participation aux traductions)
• À l’organisation de colloques ou d’autres événements scientifiques dans le cadre du projet AnceStra (1 colloque prévu chaque année, dont 1 en Tanzanie)
• À l’organisation des réunions de travail de l’équipe AnceStra
• Aux recherches bibliographiques (concepts théoriques et contextes sociétaux en Afrique et en Europe) de l’équipe
• À l’enquête collective de l’équipe

 

Recherche individuelle :

 

Le/la doctorant/e inscrira sa recherche doctorale dans le projet AnceStra. Le travail de thèse original visera à saisir les significations que les restes ancestraux saisis durant la période coloniale revêtent aujourd’hui pour les personnes concernées par des demandes de restitution en Tanzanie.

• À partir d’une enquête empirique en Tanzanie se fondant sur le recueil de récits de vie, d’entretiens semi-directifs, d’observations ethnographiques et d’entretiens collectifs, le/la doctorante visera à analyser les significations que les restes ancestraux revêtent pour différents acteurs inclus dans la chaîne de demande de restitutions
• Des recherches théoriques approfondie seront réalisées sur des concepts à déterminer durant le travail doctoral, par exemple la mémoire (post)coloniale, les transmissions intergénérationnelles, le deuil et les rituels funéraires, les mémoires transnationales, les restitutions en contextes (post)coloniaux
• Des recherches approfondies sur le contexte de la recherche (Tanzanie, France) seront réalisées
• Des ouvertures comparatives dans le projet de thèse sont particulièrement encouragées : par exemple, un chapitre comparant les processus de restitutions (post)coloniales en Tanzanie et dans l’un des autres pays concernés par AnceStra

 

Conditions particulières d’exercice :

Déplacements et missions en Tanzanie, mais aussi dans les pays concernés par le projet.  

Le/la doctorant/e travaillera en équipe. Celle-ci sera composée de la responsable du projet, de la manager du projet et de 2 chercheurs/chercheuses contractuel/le/s, en charge du terrain d’enquête en France et en Namibie. Certains interviews seront menés en tandem avec un membre de l’équipe AnceStra.

Le/la doctorant/e sera inscrit/e à l’Ecole doctorale de l’EHESS et résidera en France durant le contrat doctoral. La maîtrise ou l’apprentissage de la langue française sera incontournable. La thèse pourra être rédigée en anglais, mais elle sera accompagnée d’un résumé d’environ 50 pages en français. La soutenance se déroulera en anglais et en français.

Compétences requises :

• Expérience dans la réalisation d’enquêtes qualitatives, en particulier à partir de récits de vie et d’observations ethnographiques
• Connaissance des travaux scientifiques et des débats sur les restitutions en contextes postcoloniaux
• Autonomie et capacité d’initiative
• Capacité de travail en équipe internationale et multidisciplinaire
• Compétences linguistiques courantes en anglais (à l’oral et à l’écrit), en swahili, et si possible dans d’autres langues africaines pratiquées en Tanzanie
• Utilisation d’outils numériques : Word, Excel.

Profil recherché :

• Master 2 en sciences sociales en cours (la signature du contrat doctoral sera soumise à l’obtention effective du diplôme de master)
• Première inscription en thèse en 2026-2027, en doctorat de sociologie ou d’anthropologie

Working environment and context:

The École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences, www.ehess.fr) is a graduate-only research institution that has a unique standing in the world of research and higher education in France. It hosts scholars from all over the world committed to the study of contemporary societies seen within broad cultural and historical contexts. It trains students up to PhD level in all disciplines of the social and human sciences. Currently, 1500 master and 1500 PhD students (with nearly 250 dissertations defended each year) are enrolled in the institution. The EHESS is also home to 40 research units organized around a particular field, approach or, for a third of them, “cultural area”. Within these units, more than 500 researchers develop knowledge and train and supervise master's and PhD students.

The EHESS is one of the founding members of the public establishment “Campus Condorcet” which supports research programs of the Condorcet-members and provides their staff and students working conditions that meet international standards.

The contract PhD student will be integrated into the Laboratoire d'Anthropologie Politique, a center for the production, expression, dissemination and articulation of anthropological and critical approaches and readings of contemporary societies.

 

Presentation of the project:

AnceStra is an ERC Consolidator Grant project funded by the European Commission for a period of five years, from October 2025 to September 2030. Through a sociological approach, it explores the meanings individuals and groups concerned by processes of repatriation of ancestral remains in postcolonial contexts attribute to the concerned human remains. The project departs from demands of restitution concerning a specific collection: the ancestral remains from former German colonies in Africa which today are housed at the Institute of Anatomy of the University of Strasbourg. The concerned ancestral remains entered the institute between 1892 and 1911, during the German annexation of Alsace-Lorraine, when the University of Strasbourg had become German. A ground-breaking, two-way South-North/North-South, South-South and North-North qualitative socio-anthropological study in France, Namibia, Tanzania, and to a lesser extent in Cameroon, Germany and Togo will be conducted by an international and interdisciplinary network of researchers.

 

Tasks within the collective project:

The contract PhD student will participate in: 

• Organizing and taking part in the project’s monthly seminars of collective analysis (developing the agenda and drafting the minutes, participating in the translation work)
• Organizing conferences or other scientific events of the AnceStra project (one conference planned each year, including one in Tanzania)
• Organizing the AnceStra team’s working meetings
• The team’s literature review (on theoretical concepts and African and European societal contexts)
• The collective empirical study

 

Individual research:

The PhD candidate will integrate her/his doctoral research into the AnceStra project. The original thesis will aim to grasp the meanings that ancestral remains taken during the colonial period hold today for persons concerned by processes of restitution in Tanzania.

 

• Drawing on an empirical study in Tanzania based on biographical interviews, semi-structured interviews, ethnographic observations, and group interviews, the PhD candidate will analyze the meanings that ancestral remains hold for various stakeholders involved in the process of seeking restitution
• In-depth theoretical research will be conducted on concepts to be determined during the course of the doctoral work, such as (post)colonial memory, intergenerational transmission, mourning and funeral rituals, transnational memories, or restitution in (post)colonial contexts
• In-depth research on the research context (Tanzania, France) will be conducted
• Comparative approaches in the thesis proposal are particularly encouraged: for example, a chapter comparing (post)colonial processes of restitution in Tanzania and in one of the other countries covered by AnceStra (Cameroon, France, Germany, Namibia, Togo)

 

Specific working conditions:

 

Travel and fieldwork in Tanzania, as well as in the countries involved in the project. 

The doctoral student will work as part of a team. The team consists of the project director, the project manager, and two contract researchers responsible for fieldwork in France and Namibia. Some interviews will be conducted in tandem with a member of the AnceStra team.

The doctoral student will be enrolled in the EHESS Doctoral School and will reside in France for the duration of the doctoral contract. Proficiency in or the ability to learn French is essential. The dissertation may be written in English, but it must be accompanied by an abstract of approximately 50 pages in French. The defense will be conducted in English and French.

 

Required skills:

• Experience in conducting qualitative research, especially based on biographical interviews and ethnographic observations
• Knowledge of scientific work and debates on restitutions in postcolonial contexts
• Ability to work autonomously and to take initiative
• Ability to work in international and multidisciplinary teams
• Fluent language skills in English (spoken and written), in Swahili, and, if possible, in other languages spoken in Tanzania
• Use of digital tools: Word, Excel

 

 

Profile:

• Hold a Master’s degree in the social sciences or currently pursue a Master’s degree in Social Sciences (the signing of the doctoral contract is contingent upon the successful completion of the Master’s degree)
• First enrollment for a PhD in 2026–2027, in sociology or anthropology
